Your newborn will most likely try to feed soon after birth, but that doesn't mean they're born knowing exactly how. Breastfeeding is a new skill for both of you to learn, and it isn’t always easy! Even if things don’t go well at first, don't feel it's your fault or give up straightaway. Most issues can be resolved by following the advice in these pages. Here we look at some of the most common problems that can arise and what you can do to get round them.
Just like you, they'll need to learn to feed and you'll need to help them overcome challenges along the way. Ask your midwife, health visitor or breastfeeding counsellor for help and advice if your baby is having any problems, and take a look at the list below for immediate advice.
